Jose Mourinho, the former manager of Manchester United, has recently launched a scathing attack on several key players who are still donning the famous red jersey.
Although Mourinho did not explicitly name names, it is widely believed that his comments were directed towards a select group of players who have failed to live up to expectations.
Among those rumoured to be at the receiving end of Mourinho’s wrath are Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial, and defender Luke Shaw.
“There are still a couple of players still there I didn’t want five or six years ago,” Mourinho said.
“I think they represent a little bit of what I consider not the best professional profile to a club of a certain dimension.”
“But I did my job there. Time always tells the truth. I would love Manchester United to succeed.” Mourinho added.
Mourinho enjoyed a successful two-year tenure as the manager of Manchester United, winning two major trophies during the 2016-17 season.
In his debut season, Mourinho led Manchester United to victory in the UEFA Europa League and the EFL Cup.
In the UEFA Europa League, Manchester United defeated Ajax with a 2-0 win in the final on May 24, 2017. This victory secured United’s place in the following season’s UEFA Champions League.
In the EFL Cup, Manchester United emerged victorious with a 3-2 win over Southampton in the final on February 26, 2017. This triumph marked Mourinho as the first Manchester United manager to win a major trophy in his debut season.
United sacked Mourinho in 2018 after a tough start to the Premier League season. His departure came after United’s defeat to Liverpool, which confirmed their worst start to a campaign in 28 years.
Erik ten Hag’s tenure as the manager of United during the 2023-24 season has been challenging. The team has struggled to live up to their previous successes.
During his time at United, Ten Hag has made some notable signings. These include Andre Onana for £43 million, Rasmus Hojlund for £72 million, and Mason Mount for £60 million.
