When Does NBA Free Agency Start in 2023?

The NBA’s season of free agency for 2023 will start on June 30. According to the rules of the league, the teams will be able to talk to the players without a contract from on that date.

However, contracts to the bonds can only be made after July 6, that is, one week after the opening of the market.

The detail is that when free agency opens, the 2023 NBA Draft will have already taken place. After all, recruitment is scheduled for June 22.

However, fans will already know who will have the favour of selecting the French phenomenon Victor Wembanyama.

In the NBA, there are two types of free agents: restricted (who can receive offers from any team in the League, but with their current team having the option to cover them) and unrestricted (who can sign with any team).

Four years ago, the Athletic produced a series of articles about the wage rules of the NBA. In the first part, they discuss how the wage cap works and all the rules that govern it.

In the second, they explain the types of contracts that players can have. Finally, in the last part, we talk about the trading mechanism adopted by the NBA.

In 2023, the NBA’s free agency will have some big names. Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook, Nikola Vucevic, Jerami Grant, Jakob Poeltl, Brook Lopez and D’Angelo Russell will be out of contract and unrestricted free agents.

On the other hand, names like James Harden, Draymond Green, Khris Middleton, Fred VanVleet, Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma will be able to give up the last year of their current bonds. If they choose to do so, they automatically become unrestricted free agents.

There is a deadline for trading in the NBA during the season. The date changes from year to year, but typically falls in the first half of February, when most teams reach the 50-game mark. In 2023/24, the trade deadline will be on February 8 next year.
